The "Greek Gods" Couloir Traverse, June 6 2006:
I don't normally post before or after work adventures as I realize that nobody cares if I ran grandeur or soloed tingeys again, but this was an obscure and classic enough adventure on our back doorstep that I thought I should share the beta! I'd been eyeing the Apollo Couloir on Mt. Olympus since last summer when I just missed when it was "in" and backed off on one of my Saturday morning missions. Over the last 2-3 weeks I'd noticed it looked like it was in perfect condition and with Shannon and Canyon out of town this week I thought it would make an excellent "after work" adventure! I packed my gear the night before and raced out of work at 4:15. After about 1 1/2 hrs of some of the best bushwacking I've found in the Wasatch I found myself enjoying a very tasty snow climb. The snow faded as I neared the west ridge and on a hunch I soloed the low-5th class right side of the gully and found myself at the top of the Zeus Couloir. The Zeus Couloir is normally used to access the west slabs route and the upper section actually forms the left side of the west slabs. I quickly realized this presented the fastest way back to my car and would make an excellent linkup to solo down after having soloed up the Apollo Couloir! After scaring myself several times while nearly stepping some of our "fanged friends" I found myself back home before it was dark!!!!...too fun!!
